BUILDING SECTION SURVEYS
Building Section Surveys provide measured vertical drawings through an existing building, showing relationships between floors, ceilings, roofs, stairs and key structural or architectural features. AMS Surveys produces sections from coordinated measured survey and laser scanning data to support architects, engineers and project teams working on refurbishment, extension, conversion and complex existing buildings.
LASER SCAN SURVEYS WHAT YOU GET
Our Measured Building Surveys can include:
-
Floor plans and layout drawings
-
External and internal elevations
-
Cross sections
-
Roof plans
-
Reflected ceiling plans
-
CAD drawings (DWG format)
-
Point cloud data
-
3D BIM models, including Revit outputs where required
All outputs are tailored to your project requirements, whether for planning, design, refurbishment or commercial use.
TYPICAL PROJECTS AND APPLICATIONS
Building Section Surveys are commonly commissioned for projects such as:
Refurbishment and conversion projects where floor-to-floor relationships are critical
Roof alterations, loft conversions and extensions
Historic buildings with irregular levels, roof structures or varying floor construction
Design coordination between architecture and structural engineering
Change-of-use projects involving new stairs, lifts or vertical circulation
Projects where existing drawings do not reliably show heights or building geometry
For a broader existing-building package, see Measured Building Surveys. Related AMS Surveys services can be coordinated where the project also requires design, condition or heritage input.

COMMON OUTPUTS PROVIDED
Depending on the agreed scope, AMS Surveys can provide:
CAD cross sections in DWG format
Long sections through larger or complex buildings
PDF section drawings at the agreed scale
Floor, ceiling, ridge, eaves and opening levels where included in scope
Visible structural and architectural features requested by the design team
Sections extracted from point cloud or Revit survey models where appropriate

MEASURED BUILDING SURVEY FAQs
Q: What is a measured building survey?
A: A measured building survey provides accurate drawings of an existing property, supporting planning, refurbishment, retrofit and redevelopment work.
Q: Do you work with heritage and listed buildings?
A: Yes, we regularly survey historic and heritage assets, producing elevations and sections suitable for conservation-led projects.
Q: What formats do you provide?
A: Survey drawings are typically issued as PDF and CAD-ready files, tailored to the design team’s requirements.
Q: Is this suitable for commercial buildings?
A: Yes, our measured surveys are commonly commissioned for offices, retail units, industrial buildings and mixed-use developments.

ABOUT BUILDING SECTION SURVEYS
Sections help designers understand the vertical dimension of a building in a way that floor plans alone cannot. On older buildings, floor levels may vary, walls may lean, roof structures may be irregular and ceiling zones may change substantially from room to room. A coordinated measured section can reduce assumptions at the design stage and help identify where proposed work interfaces with existing geometry. The location and number of sections should therefore be chosen with the architect or engineer around the parts of the building that matter most.
