MEASURED BUILDING SURVEY ACCURACY AND SPECIFICATION
Measured Building Survey Accuracy should be defined by the purpose of the project, not by a headline number alone. AMS Surveys agrees the required survey scope, tolerance, level of detail, control and deliverables before mobilisation so the resulting information is suitable for design, planning, heritage, verification or BIM use. This prevents both under-surveying, which creates risk, and unnecessary over-surveying, which adds time and cost without improving the decision being made.
LASER SCAN SURVEYS WHAT YOU GET
Our Measured Building Surveys can include:
-
Floor plans and layout drawings
-
External and internal elevations
-
Cross sections
-
Roof plans
-
Reflected ceiling plans
-
CAD drawings (DWG format)
-
Point cloud data
-
3D BIM models, including Revit outputs where required
All outputs are tailored to your project requirements, whether for planning, design, refurbishment or commercial use.
TYPICAL PROJECTS AND APPLICATIONS
Measured Building Survey Accuracy and Specification are commonly commissioned for projects such as:
Architectural design briefs requiring a defined drawing accuracy
Heritage surveys where irregular geometry must be retained rather than simplified
BIM and Revit projects where modelling tolerances need to be agreed
As-built verification of completed works
Complex commercial refurbishment
Multi-consultant projects where all parties need a common survey control and datum
For a broader existing-building package, see Measured Building Surveys. Related AMS Surveys services can be coordinated where the project also requires design, condition or heritage input.

COMMON OUTPUTS PROVIDED
Depending on the agreed scope, AMS Surveys can provide:
A defined survey scope and drawing specification
Agreed accuracy or tolerance requirements appropriate to the task
Survey control and datum information where required
CAD, point cloud or BIM outputs produced to the agreed brief
Clear inclusions and exclusions for architectural features
Quality checks appropriate to the selected capture and output method

MEASURED BUILDING SURVEY FAQs
Q: What is a measured building survey?
A: A measured building survey provides accurate drawings of an existing property, supporting planning, refurbishment, retrofit and redevelopment work.
Q: Do you work with heritage and listed buildings?
A: Yes, we regularly survey historic and heritage assets, producing elevations and sections suitable for conservation-led projects.
Q: What formats do you provide?
A: Survey drawings are typically issued as PDF and CAD-ready files, tailored to the design team’s requirements.
Q: Is this suitable for commercial buildings?
A: Yes, our measured surveys are commonly commissioned for offices, retail units, industrial buildings and mixed-use developments.

ABOUT MEASURED BUILDING SURVEY ACCURACY AND SPECIFICATION
Different survey tasks require different tolerances. A planning elevation does not necessarily need the same specification as an engineering verification survey, and a heritage record may need high-density detail in selected areas rather than uniform modelling everywhere. Accuracy is also different from detail. A drawing can be dimensionally accurate while intentionally omitting minor features, provided the scope is clear. AMS Surveys focuses on fit-for-purpose information, agreeing the intended use, capture method, drawing scale, required elements and expected tolerance before site work begins.
